This is Ms. Powell's second year in Broward county.  She came to Sawgrass Elementary after teaching for 5 years in Prince Georges County, Maryland, an urban suburb of Washington, D.C., and briefly in Liberty City in Miami-Dade County, Florida.  Ms. Powell has taught HeadStart (Pre-K) and second grade, but she especially enjoys teaching third graders and has spent three years at that grade level. 

Ms. Powell earned her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Art from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and her master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Maryland College.  She has worked with numerous student teachers and has served as a mentor and demonstration teacher. 

In the 2005-2006 school year, Ms. Powell will begin the process of National Board Certification.
