As I have mentioned elsewhere on the site, I think that specific lesson ideas for themes and topics are very easy to find on the ‘net. The problem is that most don’t go into enough detail about how to make the lesson run smoothly, and what type of routines and procedures must be in place. You can’t just send kids off with no guidelines to do a group mural project, no matter how engaging it is, and if you’re not prepared, you’ll waste half of your class time distributing manipulatives and materials, no matter how cute that gummy bear math lesson may be.
Here are some of the missing pieces of the instructional puzzle that are usually not taught to teachers in their training. I would love to hear your comments and input, and veteran teachers, please email me your tips for the categories below so I can add them to the page.
